On October 26th, Cuban leader Fidel Castro wrote to Nikita Khrushchev. Castro warns that an attack is imminent within the next 24 to 72 hours. If it is a full invasion by the Americans, or the "imperialists", as he calls them, Castro wants the Soviets to defend Cuba to the point of incapacitating America from a nuclear first strike capability. In other words, strike first with nuclear weapons if they invade Cuba. If the U.S. invades, Castro asks Khrushchev to "eliminate this danger forever, in an act of the most legitimate self-defense." Castro seems ready to invite a nuclear war if Cuba is invaded. Why would he be willing to risk a war in which hundreds of millions could die?
A short biography of Fidel Castro.
