In this recording of a meeting on October 27th, Kennedy decides that it would be best for the U.S. to not discuss trading the Turkish missiles until work is halted on the Cuban missile sites and the bases are inoperable. However, he seems intent on making the deal if that is what it will take. McGeorge Bundy raises excellent questions to the President about the political ramifications of the Turkish missile trade, particularly with NATO allies. As you listen, think about pressures on the President. Where would he be feeling pressure from? Should he wait until the Soviets pull back their missiles before removing the Turkish missiles?

President Kennedy was the first President to record phone calls and meetings. Only a few people knew he was doing it at the time. Do you think it is alright for a President to tape phone calls and meetings without the people involved knowing about it?
