In June of 1961, the U.S. placed Jupiter nuclear missiles in Turkey. In response to this, the Soviets begin to transport surface to air missile launchers (SAM's), bombers, and most importantly, nuclear missiles to Cuba beginning in September, 1962. American surveillance planes take pictures of the ships as they near Cuba. Flights of the U.S. U-2 spy planes capture an increasing buildup of Soviet force on Cuba. The President is made aware of the situation. On October 14th, a U-2 takes pictures of Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) sites on the island. The President is brought up to speed on the situation with a briefing.
